There's no doubt that technology has made a big difference to flashlights. We can say goodbye to big clumsy devices with short battery life and bulbs that break as soon as you look at them the wrong way. A modern LED flashlight is robust, compact and powerful, and runs a lot longer on a standard battery than a bulb ever would. Just like any other device they're not all the same, though, and before laying out the money for one you'll want to know that it's good value and the right choice for you. We publish LED flashlight reviews to help you make that decision.

Of course a review's no good if it doesn't look at all the important details of whatever we're reviewing, so we take a lot of care to make sure our LED flashlight reviews are going to be useful to you. Usually we'll take a good look at the torch first, figuring out how to use it and checking how well it's been designed and put together. Then we'll use it for a while and see how it performs. If it eats batteries we'll note that. If it's the brightest thing we've ever seen we'll tell you. If it stops working we'll tell you that too. What you get in one of our reviews isn't just the manufacturer's specifications (although we'll give you those too.) It's the inside information on how it performs in use. After all when you use the flashlight you decide to buy it won't be in some testing lab; it's going to be out in the bush, around your campsite or on your boat. You want to know how it performs in real-world conditions. Well, that's what we'll tell you.

If you spend any time off road in a 4wd vehicle then sooner or later you’re going to need a work light. Whether you have to carry out minor repairs, remove a dead branch from under the chassis or just look for your keys a good light is going to come in handy. The work lights most of us are familiar with are pretty basic things – usually just a cable and a wire cage with a bulb in it. They work pretty well, but they’re a bit crude and of course the trailing cable can get in the way. That usually happens at the worst possible moment, of course.

We’ve been playing with an assortment of flashlights from LED Lenser recently, and it’s been quite fun. This company has a very large range of LED flashlights, with something aimed at just about every section of the market. We’ve already talked about the neat little F1 model, so now let’s look at the slightly more traditional Photon Pump range.

Flashlights are a great bit of gear when you need an easily portable light source, but if you’ve spent a lot of time outdoors you’ll have experienced that sudden realisation that you need two hands for what you’re doing and don’t have one spare for the flashlight. Holding a heavy lump of cold metal between your teeth gets old in a hurry, and that’s when you wish you’d bought a head light. We’ve recently been trying out some flashlights from LED Lensers, and we took the chance to look at two of their H Series range of head lights too.

What can we say? We like flashlights, and that goes double for shiny new LED ones. There are a lot of those on the market now, ranging from pretty awful to outstanding, and we’ve played with quite a few. Recently we got the chance to play with some from LED Lenser, including their little F1.
